Wings and Their Designations

Galactica crew insignia nomenclature can be a tricky thing to figure out when it comes to our auction listings. When we first started out listing Duty Blues and Flight Suits you may have noticed we called the Pilot Wings “Junior” and “Senior.” Well, turns out we were incorrect in using that nomenclature for the wing designations in our listings. One of the great things about working with all of the costumes and props is that we also have the continuity books that the production crew used to reference stuff as well. While researching pins one day I noticed that the BSG production referenced the wings as “Captain Level” and “Commander/Colonel” Pilot Wings from the Miniseries till the first Season or so. “Junior” and “Senior” was never adopted as an official description. The early naming convention got a bit cumbersome for production as other “Officers” such as Junior and Senior Lieutenants were seen to have wings along with Admirals. The wings were renamed “Standard” and “Elite” Pilot Wings for Season Three and onward to alleviate the nonsensical disparity in the early description.

In an effort to maintain a sense of uniformity and consistency with what the production had done we switched over to using the correct Season Three terminology when describing Pilot Wings. The following photo is a compilation of the different nomenclature for the Pilot Wings. The top most being the correct and the bottom showing the early naming with notes/corrections.

Hope this made some level of clarification and/or a bit of trivia for you.

Good Hunting,

Steven
