Joseph Adama’s lighter is a prop first introduced in Season 1’s “The Hand of God“.

Series relevance

During a scene between Commander William Adama and his son, Lee “Apollo” Adama, Commander Adama gives him this lighter. He explains that his father, Joseph Adama, brought it to court cases as a good luck charm. According to Adama, whenever his father failed to bring it with him, he lost the court case. Adama gives the lighter to Lee as a good luck charm before leading a mission to take an asteroid where Cylons mine tylium. Lee later uses this lighter to light his cigar after successfully leading the mission after being met by Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. A picture this event is later seen in Season 4’s “Six of One” during Lee Adama’s send-off party in the officer’s mess. Admiral Adama looks at the picture as his son, Lee, drinks shots of ambrosia. In a conversation with Romo Lampkin in “Sine Qua Non“, Adama mentions having given Lee this lighter as a good luck charm.

Origins

The prop itself has been identified by Future-Past Parts as being a No. 100 Chrome, Regens Lighter.[1] The United States patent for this product was filed on March 30, 1931 and issued on Feburary 7, 1933.[2]
